A group of local air cadets are celebrating after claiming eight separate trophies in a recent competition, and being named best squadron in the local area. On Sunday 10 June, the teenagers from Droitwich faced numerous other squadrons from across the West Midlands in a variety of competitions, from Aircraft Recognition through to Drill.

Cadet Ben Law was named smartest cadet in West Mercian Wing for the second year running, whilst the squadron also came away with the trophy for smartest overall squadron. The winning Continuity Drill team meanwhile, marching in sequence without orders, were described as “phenomenal” by onlookers. The cadets also placed first in the Aircraft Recognition competition, claimed the Duke of Edinburgh achievement award, and were subsequently named the best squadron in both Worcestershire and the whole of West Mercian Wing.

The highlight of the day, however, came when the Drill team claimed their seventh consecutive victory in the West Mercian Wing Drill competition — a feat unparalleled by any other squadron. The reigning national champions fought off fierce competition to reclaim the trophy and qualify for the regional competition in September, where they will continue their quest to defend the national title, which they won at RAF Halton in November 2011.

Squadron commander Paul Wilde described the cadets’ achievements as, “Brilliant,” and praised the hard work put in by the young people. “I am incredibly proud of them,” he said, “They are a credit to both themselves and the squadron.”

Following their successes, the cadets are now looking forward to a well—deserved summer that will include adventure training, flying, and shooting, as well as numerous camps and expeditions.
